article to promote event and need for volunteers

Hi Rachel, I am truly grateful for everyones efforts! I am the publisher of Natural Awakenings. I just sent an email i found on an assoicated website to mambayarea@gmail.com but wanted to be sure that I was able to reach someone. We will be placing an article about your event in our March issue. If you could reach out to me with any pertinent details besides what I've found here I would appreciate it. I don't see any details for SF - it seems that there are additional groups but much smaller with no additional detail. We will also promote on social media, we hope to have your support in taking advantage of the synergy we can create together in getting the word out. publisher@naeastbay.com All the best, Celeste Souza

IDEAS

Ideas from a volunteer:

Hi Rachel,

I would like to share my experience spending 3 hours this afternoon outside Whole Foods in Walnut Creek. It might be worth sharing with
other volunteers so we don't have to keep reinventing the wheel.

During the first hour plus I got only a 15% response rate from the people I made contact with. You'd think I was selling cigars! Most couldn't run away fast enough. Those who signed did an about face when I said "genetically engineered food" - the magic words!. They were very enthusiastic to sign.

The second 2 hours - Success went from 15% up to 40-50%. What was different. After experimenting with all sorts of approaches, here's what seems to work:

As a person/people came outside (& was 5 to 10 feet away) I said something like:
"I can see you're someone who cares about food"
"I can see you care about what you eat..."
"I can see food is important to you"

When they had their child/children with them:
"I can see you care about what you feed your children"
or something similar.

What made the difference? I think it made the person stop and thing that
what I said was true for them. It must have touched an inner truth. They stayed focused for my next comments.

I quickly got to the point: "Would you like to have California label genetically engineered food (so we know what we're eating)?"

Once there was the emotional connection
"Would you like to sign this petition for a California ballot initiative so we know what's in our food."

Then: "Are you a registered voter? In which county? I had to scratch out 1 name because the lady had moved from Oakland to Walnut Creek but hadn't reregistered - and she signed with her Walnut Creek address. After I got 2 people from Alameda county, I just made a new sheet for them and eventually got 9 Alameda county signatures. People do move around a lot every day.)

Robin was there when I talked to a very enthusiastic woman. She got this woman to commit to collecting signatures - a new volunteer. We gave her a long training just like you gave us. We went over all the important points several times just to be sure. The more volunteers we can recruit (and train, of course) the easier it is to get to our goal!

Some other suggestions for locations: If a volunteer works in a hospital, clinic, dental office or similar facility, they can easily get colleagues to sign the petition. I'm going over to my chiropractor's office one or two days every week to get other patients to sign, if it's okay with my chiropractor, of course.  And, there are acupuncturists, nutritionists and other health related professional offices where, if we have a connection, it might be a lot easier to get signatures because there's a connection between us and the other person. And I also go to Curves where I suspect the women I know are already motivated to eat intelligently.

If you get other suggestions of what volunteers have found worked for them I know you will share it with us.

Why are the animals that eat GE feed exempt from being labeled?

"The exemptions are there for specific reasons. Initiative in CA can only be about one issue. An animal that eats GE feed can be construed as a different issue than an animal that is, itself, genetically engineered. This could be challenged in courts and would increase the likelihood if it being struck down so no gain whatsoever. So, although the writers of the initiative were not happy about it, we had to let that one go for now. If you read the microingredients portion, you will notice that it is only for 7 years. Why? Because these microingredients are very difficult to source nonGMO. They can only be .5% each and there can be no more than 10 in one item. The thinking was that if, say, a producer had corn flakes that were 90% GMO corn, 2% other stuff and 3% GMO microingredients. If they chose to source NonGMO corn, but still had to label because of the microingredients, then they would not bother. Make sense? Again..this is for a phase in period only. We ask that folks consider the monumental impact this will have and how difficult it will be to get passed. Andy Kimbrell suggests looking at it like this: if you have an accident and someone has multiple wounds, but is bleeding to death, you stop the hemorrhage first, then tend to the other wounds. Very little in politics is perfect. This is the best initiative that could get passed in 2012 Calfornia. BTW..are you aware that the EU has a .9% tolerance level for GMOs in their food? This is NOT an easy thing to do."

Feel free to contact Pamm at plarry@labelgmos.org if you want to talk more.

Great line for getting more signatures!!

Hiya,

some volunteers found this particular line very helpful- with lots of positive responses:

"Can you lend your signature for better food labeling?"

New Message Board Up and Running!

Welcome!!! Here you can post comments, discuss strategy, and organize yourselves!

Official response from completed

Welcome to the Label GMOs East Bay group. We are slowing down a little bit over the weekend for Christmas, but will pick right back up on Monday with full force :)

We will need to use this next month to build our army of volunteers. Starting Tuesday we will pick back up with another meeting. Please see the volunteers calendar to stay up to date with all of the events. Remember, if you have already attended a signature gathering workshop you do not need to attend another one.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Happy Holidayz :)
